Michael Darling
19th October - 16th November 2009
Burton Art Gallery, Kingsley Road, Bideford EX39 2QQ
daily
Weekdays 10-5pm, Saturday 10-4pm, Sundays 11-4pm

Michael Darling studied at Harrow School of Art from 1947 to 1950 and Royal Academy Schools from 1950 to 1954. After teaching at various London Schools he decided to move to North Devon, teaching at Bideford School of Art and North Devon College. Michael’s painting is traditional, using colour pigment applied to a two-dimensional surface, not conceptual art, installation or performance art. He starts by taking an idea, however vague, rough it out on the board or canvas - an intuitive method of working. Alternating between oil and acrylic, his painting is fluid, and relatively quick. The beauty of this method for Michael is its spontaneity and surprise!

Paintings that pack a punch Paintings that pack a punch
2nd May - 31st May 2009
The Plough Arts Centre, Great Torrington
Tuesday - Saturday
10am to 10pm

An exhibition of paintings by Liz Willis.
"These new expressive abstract paintings are evolving from my long fascination with paper collage, into striking and powerful paintings in their own right.  Vibrant blocks of colours in large flat areas still have echoes of their torn paper origins, whilst bright narrow stripes often spark in contrast, leading the eye, mysteriously, off the page or canvas.  These are dynamic, contemporary images, on paper and canvas, that celebrate my delight in colour and have been described by others as having a 'monumental quality' about them, regardless of their size."  Liz Willis.
And to accompany the exhibition:
A one day, hands-on workshop on May 21st. Fee: £35.00.
'The Artist talks' in the evening of May 21st - 7.30pm. Fee inc. supper: £10.

"Making the Ordinary Look Interesting" - Mike Woollacott
30th March - 26th April 2009
The Plough (Artist's Wall in cafe), Torrington
Tuesdays to Saturdays
10am -10pm
My work is mainly landscapes in acrylic and it has evolved from my past employment in the North Devon landscape - an interpretation of my experiences. I have a need to paint and draw as a means to express myself. Drawing and painting isn't about confirming what you think is there nor is it simply to make a recording of what is there - it goes deeper than that. I try through my art to make something that is exciting and interesting that might convey something to someone else.

Tuesdays to Saturdays
10am-10pm
Linda Hajdukiewicz has a new solo exhibition, her first for over two years, and it shows an entirely new side to her work – with most works seen here for the very first time.  Her new work reflects a more subtle and illustrational side to her work, with a series of pastel works of stylised landscapes.
Linda says: “I look for the raw essentials of the landscape, and am often attracted to extremes of season or weather.  For example, skeletal trees against dark skies, shafts of sunlight on a bleak day.  This drama in the landscape is extremely powerful and I aim to convey this quiet strength in these new works.”  The artist can be contacted on: linda@m2z.co.uk.  More examples of Linda's work are on her website at www.artcrop.co.uk/linda.

Mike Bartlett: Accidental Stories Mike Bartlett: Accidental Stories
1st October - 19th October 2008
Exeter Phoenix, Gandy Street, Exeter
Mon-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 11.30-5pm

Mike Bartlett is a visual storyteller who makes images that are intended to intrigue and amuse.
His work tends to be fairly small in scale because he wants to encourage the viewer to look closely, to read each image as if it were a story that can be read and re-read.  The intention is that each viewer gives meaning by interpreting what he or she sees.
Working in series, he often starts by asking “what if” about something that interests him.  This could be an event, a place, or something autobiographical.  However, It doesn’t matter to Mike that those who see his work may not be aware of how and where it started.
He works directly, drawing freely using pencil, water based crayons and gouache or acrylic on paper and canvas, editing as he goes.  Shadows and glimpses of things, places and events appear as he works, aesthetic decisions are made, each contributing to forming a story in his head that helps the image on its way.  To where?  That’s up to you.

Expressions of an Intimate Ecology Expressions of an Intimate Ecology
27th September - 25th October 2008
Burton Art Gallery and Museum, Bideford

This exhibition is an exciting and challenging exhibition of new work from painter Peter Ward.  His most recent pictures joyfully and humorously juxtapose the deeply spiritual resonance of ancient earth pigments with more contemporary ideas and imagery.
Peter is a successful and ambitious North Devon artist.  His influences are predominantly from primitive and children’s art combined with an understanding of contemporary art practices and ecological theory.  His vibrant images are built up quickly with layers and shapes of colour, interweaving patterns, textures and symbols.  Figures may appear and disappear as narratives unfold; responding to incidents experienced and imagined, tales of moments when the earth sings deeply with its inherent beauty and vitality.
