After leaving the Slade in 1981 I ran a commercial sculpture studio for about twenty years. However, in the last few years within my sketchbooks and journals I have generated ideas that have been explored through a large body of work consisting of paintings and drawings embracing a series of personal icons which are then used as compositional devices. This all sounds very dry but the act of painting, in all its forms and the use of colour, has really provided a drive and motivation not felt for some time. In the 2012 Bristol Biennalle I worked with my son, the audio-visual artist Tom Newell, making work that explored physical spaces and objects that were part of the environment, the artwork revealing hidden stories behind the buildings and other chosen sites. Since moving to Bideford the interest in hidden narratives has been extended to include subjects from industrial history and our declining maritime industry. This interest particularly focuses on the old ships and boats moored along the quay at Bideford whose dents, rust and unusual physical additions hint at their own individual histories.
