Artist's Profile

Molly Norman

Molly was a commercial artist after leaving school, her training not completed when a bereavement forced her out to a "proper secure job".
27 years ago she "discovered" photography as a form of instant art, bought a trusty Olympus OM1 camera, and started a learing curve and new life.  Later she was teaching photography privately and in 3 local schools.  She became a Western Counties judge, a lecturer specialising in AV, took wedding and school photos, later introducing digital imaging to schools.
She always thought there was an artist inside her waiting to emerge, but after a £5 car boot buy of a large quantity of art materials, she found it not so easy!  Joining Pilton Art Group she found help and inspiration and from several West country artists' workshops Joining Ilfracombe, Lynton, North Devon Arts and Tiverton Art Societies introduced her to the magic of exhibitions and selling.

Artist's Statement

I paint rather vivid colours, finding the beautiful North Devon countryside and seas glorious. Watercolours combined with pastel, pastels on their own, or water based oils are my preferred mediums as they allow me to blend (and rescue!). I occasionally use other mediums for variety.
I love to lose myself in painting close up pictures of the sea with its never ending, ever changing and exciting moods, but I am quite happy painting local scenery, wild areas and especially the moors. I find coming from a photographic background has made me wish to keep some part of every painting in focus for the eye to rest!
